One of the hardest characters to write or draw is the one who has no dialogue. Whether it’s an animal, a mute character, or a machine, if they can’t speak, you have to find another way to communicate what they’re thinking and feeling.
That usually comes down to body language, facial expressions, timing, and, in some cases, simple sounds like beeps and blips. Take R2-D2, for example. We never know exactly what he’s saying, just as we don’t understand Chewie’s growls, yet both the audience and the characters around them always seem to know what they mean. Making that feel nature takes a tremendous amount of skill.
One of the best Modern examples is Jeff the Land Shark. He doesn’t speak actual dialogue but we know what he’s thinking. That’s pure skill.
