I’ve gotten a lot of questions about why I set the comic in the early 90’s instead of the present day. There are actually a couple of reasons, and it’s not just because I’m a Gen X kid.

First, I grew up then, so it’s a world I remember vividly. It’s easier for me to write because it feels familiar.

Second, and this is the big one, there were no cell phones or constant connectivity. If you got into trouble as a kid and you weren’t home, you were on your own. There was no pulling out a phone and calling for help the second things went sideways. That creates a very different kind of tension, and it opens up story possibilities that are much harder to make believable today.

Whenever I explain it this way, people usually go, “Huh… that makes sense.”
