They don’t make villains in cartoon movies or TV series the way they used to. There was something special about Cobra Commander or Megatron. They were ruthless and intimidating, yet completely inept at times.
Some people might see that as growth in storytelling, but I think it humanized the villains in a way that many modern ones don’t.
The studio that gets this right more often than not is DreamWorks. Most of the time, they nail the villain. They’re ruthless, devious, and sometimes even deadly, yet they’re still ultimately beatable. Their flaws make them feel like real characters instead of unstoppable forces.
